Timeline: The Development of Medical Imaging based on the Evolution of Physics

1790 – Lazzaro Spallanzani first discovered that bats maneuvered in flight using their hearing rather than sight

Michael Faraday (1821) –  He discovered that the ‘voltaic arc’ was accompanied by the florescence of gas– he called ‘radiant matter’.

Julius Plucker (1850) – First to observe Green Glass Flouresence in partially evacuated discharge tubes.

1877 – Jacques and Pierre Currie were the first to discover piezoelectricity

1895 – The Discovery of X-Rays by Conrad Roentgen

Wilhelm Hittorf (1870) – discovered florescent discharge, he termed ‘cathode rays’.

Joseph John Thomson discovered electron – 1896

1913 – William David Coolidge invents the hot cathode x-ray tube

Charles Barkla discovered that x-rays could be scattered by gases

1927 – Arthur H. Compton receives the Nobel Prize in Physics for scattering of x-rays by electrons.

1936 – Petrus (Peter) Josephus Wilhelmus Debye  receives the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for diffraction of x-rays and electrons in gases.

1923 – George de Hevesy published the first study on the use of the naturally radioactive 212Pb as radioactive tracer to follow the absorption and translocation in the roots, stems and leaves of Vicia faba, also known as the broad bean.[10][11] – resulted in development of gamma camera. Received Nobel Prize in Chemistry – 1943

Professor Isador I.Rabi – first observed the quantum phenomenon dubbed ‘nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)’

Felix Bloch – co-discovered ‘magnetic resonance’

Edward Purcell – co-discovered ‘magnetic resonance’

Carl D. Anderson –American Physicist who discovered positron; won Nobel Prize in 1936

Paul Dirac – predicted positrons and other antiparticles in 1928.
